Green Scythe Fair AGM Announces 2020 event date

The Green Scythe Fair celebrated the success of the 2019 event at their AGM last week with news it will return next year on Sunday 14th June, continuing with this year’s exciting changes, from discounted advance ticket sales and a bigger and better site layout, to Green Craft workshops on Saturday and the new dedicated bus service from Taunton and Yeovil.

New partnership with Land Workers Alliance
The event planning for 2020 has already started! Besides improving and refining the changes we introduced last year, we will be expanding the rural and land based skills and workshops in partnership with the Land Workers Alliance.

Driving 1.5 times round the Earth to get to the Fair
As we strive to reduce the impact of the Green Scythe Fair, the biggest environmental impact is from those driving to the event. We hope that the visitors next year help us by taking up the bus service, lift sharing and cycle or walk if they live locally. It is estimated that visitors coming to the event in cars drive the accumulated equivalent of 1.5 times around the circumference of the planet. So please think about how you can help reduce this for next year's event! Keep an eye on our website for details of the bus service, plan how to cycle, walk or lift share –  see our website page: www.greenfair.org.uk/getting-there for details.

First woman overall Scything Champion
The scything competition winner and overall champion was won by Andi Rickard, a first for the championship to be won by a woman for the fastest and best quality cut with a scythe. Congratulations to Andi and all the competitors. For full results see scytheassociation.org/green-scythe-fair-championship-results-2019

This year the stalls new layout around the willows enabled better visibility of the world famous scything championship and this new stalls area went down really well, featuring even more stalls focussed on the green and environmental ethos, to educate and inspire us tall to get to zero carbon before 2030 to prevent run away climate change.

Green Community Grants – open for application
Due to the success of the event with a record number of visitors this year, we have been able to build up a community fund which is now open for applications from local sustainable/environmental projects. For details of the criteria and how to apply please see our website page: www.greenfair.org.uk/grants.  Deadline for applications is 31st December 2019.

It’s volunteers who make the Fair and we always need more.
We're looking forward to seeing you on the 14th June 2020! We want to thank all the volunteers, entertainers, stall-holders and visitors who made 2019 GSF the most successful ever, and to Thorney Lakes Caravan and Camping for hosting our event in their wonderful setting on the Somerset Levels.

There will of course be plenty of eco entertainment and activities in the Green Kidz area, from facepainting to stonecarving. We are delighted that High Ham Eco warriors are coming to the Green Kidz area this year. This group of highly motivated children from High Ham primary school will be displaying information about the recycling projects they are running in school, from batteries and toothpaste tubes to crisp packets and tetrapak. They will also be running an ‘Ecobrick' workshop helping to take non recyclable plastic out of the environment that risks ending up in the soils and oceans. These plucky a children will show you how to do it at their stall and at 2.30pm Tom White will be giving a talk all about it. More info about Ecobricks check out: www.ecobricks.org.
