Press Release 2022

May 2023

It’s one month until the Green Scythe Fair returns at Thorney Lakes on Sunday 11th June… so get your tickets soon!

The Fair is looking to be even more spectacular this year, with great workshops and talks, more food stalls (yes we’ve corrected that), a new Cider Bar, excellent music from our friends at Fanny Hatstand and the David Hall, and fun (and educational) activities for children, all surrounding the 17th West Country Scythe Championships.

We also have a full programme of workshops on Saturday 10th, which should be purchased online this year. Please visit our website for info & links to tickets for workshops on Saturday and tickets for the Green Scythe Fair on Sunday:  www.greenfair.org.uk

As with last year, we are again offering subsidised tickets for travelling by bus (three routes from Taunton, Wells and Yeovil, and villages en-route) and also those who cycle to the event. There are a very few tickets left to come by boat and carriage from Langport.

Our gates open at 11am, and straight off you can join the Opening Parade, led by the XR Samba Band – starting at the main visitor entrance at Gate 2. It will circumnavigate the site and end up at the Acoustic Stage. Ready for refreshment? Drop off at the new Cider Bar to enjoy samples from our wonderful local cider makers.

As 2pm in the Music Tent, we are recasting our Debate this year into the Green Scythe Fair Parley with the title “Up in Smoke - is burning wood sustainable?” We’ll be trying to take the heat out of the arguments and reach agreement on the right way forward for this important and traditional source of fuel.

As you know, this is a volunteer-led event - we rely on volunteers to organise and run the Green Scythe Fair.  If you’d like to get involved, and get in for free, then we’d love to hear from you!  Just email volunteer@greenfair.org.uk.  In addition to free entry, two hours volunteering gets you a free drink, 4 hours also a free meal!

We look forward to seeing you there! 🌱🎪💚

Notes

The Green Scythe Fair is held at Thorney Lakes, Muchelney, TA10 0DW on Sunday 11th June, open from 11am. For more information, see www.greenfair.org.uk (for camping, see www.thorneylakes.co.uk). Or please contact for additional press info:

Francis Blake, chair, on 07973 955429.

NB This is a cash only event – please bring cash with you as most stalls and eateries do not have card facilities.

As the Green Scythe Fair continues to aim for minimal environmental impact, we are asking visitors to bring their own reusable plates, cups & cutlery to help achieve zero waste created at the event.

The Green Scythe Fair experience should start with your journey to get there: It is a ‘Green’ Fair and visitors are asked to minimise their carbon footprint – most of the day's carbon emissions come from visitors’ cars. The message is, if you can, please come by foot, bicycle, bus or boat on the nearby River Parrett or make sure you car-share. For ramblers and cyclists information routes are already on www.greenfair.org.uk/getting-there.

Entry charges are:

- Adult £15

- Adult travelling by bus (return) £10

- Adult travelling by bike £5
